A very special screening of the classic British film 'Brassed Off' closes the Opera North in the City festival on Sunday afternoon with a moving celebration of Yorkshire pluck. Rousing and poignant in equal measure, the score will be performed live in sync with the movie on the high definition big screen by the real stars that inspired the story - the Grimethorpe Colliery Band together with members of the Orchestra of Opera North.
This 1996 bittersweet comedy drama, written and directed by Mark Herman, stars Pete Postlethwaite as Danny, the devoted leader of the Grimley Colliery Band who is determined to show the government ‘we are not defeated’. Ewan McGregor, Stephen Tompkinson and Tara Fitzgerald are stand-outs in the impressive ensemble cast.
Before the film, the Orchestra of Opera North will present a dynamic first half performing some of the iconic orchestral scores including the William Tell Overture and the Concierto de Aranjuez (Orange Juice Concerto) that were later arranged for a brass ensemble, as featured in Brassed Off.

Millennium Square
For your safety, the venue security team will be running bag searches ahead of entering the arena for all events in Millennium Square. We advise you to plan your travel arrangements in advance and arrive in plenty of time.

Food
Please note, you cannot bring your own food and drink (other than small 500ml water bottles with unbroken seals) into the arena. Free drinking water will be provided.
A selection of hot food will be available to purchase inside the arena along with a licensed bar offering beer, cider, wines, a selection of spirits and soft drinks. So if you’re in a hurry and rushing straight from work, there’ll be something you can grab inside the arena.
The Great British Weather
It is an outdoor event – there is no roof cover and there will be no patio heaters. You are advised to dress warmly as, even on a nice day, the temperature will drop in the evening.
In the case of bad weather, you are advised to pack a water proof as no large umbrellas are allowed, and umbrellas in general may restrict the views of others so you may be asked to put it down by a steward.
Cash Machines
Please note, there are no cash machines within the arena.
Can I leave the arena if needed?
No. There are no pass outs issued – when you’re in, you’re in.
Children
All persons under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult. Please note, Back to Basics is limited to age 14+ and the film is Cert 15
VIP ticket holders
If you have booked a VIP ticket, collect your exclusive VIP pass from the ‘VIP lanyard and Press ticket collection’ desk at Box Office desk inside Carriageworks Theatre before you enter the arena. Once you’ve collected your lanyard, there will be banners displaying ‘VIP Reception’ at Civic Hall where you’ll find your exclusive bar with complimentary refreshments and the toilets. If you get lost, there will be plenty of staff on hand to help.
